At the Pahrump Social Powwow, it is a time to gather for Native Americans and non-natives alike. Pahrump is home to the Western Shoshone and Paiute tribes. During the Social Powwow, organizer Paula Elefante, anticipates at least 500 to 750 people will pass through each day.

In the past, the celebration began with a spiritual side where participants gathered to give thanks. Veteran Native Americans were honored at this time after which three days of dancing and drumming commences.

Marge Pesek of the Review Journal once called this Pahrump’s largest cultural event of the year, which brings Native American tribes together for three day celebration of beating drummers, dancers, musicians and craftsman from tribes all over the West. This year’s theme is celebration of YOUTH!

The powwow celebrates the Native American Culture and preserves the cultural heritage, and even renews friendships. Visitors to the powwow experience colorful dancers in elaborate Native American regalia. At the powwow, dancing is a major part of the gathering. Enjoy dancing for all ages alike. Each tribe has their own tribal dances. There is even a time where all the tribes gather for an intertribal dance.

In addition to dancers, Native American artists and craftsman display their wares and one can expect to sample many dishes of Native American food as well. The Powwow also usually attracts at least 30 to 40 crafts booths. This cultural celebration is a great time to start your holiday shopping.
