Pahrump Tourism’s grant award was given for a town mural project at the community’s Bob Ruud Community Center and will feature safe and open messaging. The initial intent was for the Pahrump Arts Council (PAC) to develop the mural. PAC indicated at this time the completion deadline of December 30th was not doable. At that time tourism reached out to locals such as the Pahrump Valley High School and Rosemary Clarke Middle School All local entities declined the December 30th deadline appearing Pahrump Tourism would forfeit the grant.

Juraj “George” Sojka, Destination Development Specialist, with Travel Nevada reached out to Reno-based artist, Bryce Chisholm, AbcArtAttack. Bryce connected with Arlette Ledbetter, Tourism Director, and contracted to complete the mural in an “Americana” theme.

The mural will come alive on the Bob Ruud Community Center beginning December 27th.  The artist’s design will include the American flag and a wild horse in a contemporary setting. The messaging “Stay Safe to Stay Open” is part of the grant criteria and will be clearly visible with the artwork.

Pahrump Tourism has long considered a mural trail. The community center mural can be considered the inaugural project with future projects and grants to follow. The murals are very successful in other communities across America by enhancing local pride, increasing tourism, and providing photo opportunities. Murals can do a lot more than make a town attractive. Outdoor wall murals also help attract a significant number of visitors dedicated to such artwork. Street art can evoke emotion, entertain and bring people together. Even in this tumultuous year, mural tours are still being conducted as a socially distanced safe activity. There have been many new works inspired by the pandemic.

This grant program was made possible through Coronavirus Relief Funds through the federal CARES Act and administered by the Nevada Division of Tourism, also known as Travel Nevada. The goal of this grant is to promote the community as safe and open for visitors.
