The New Western “Gold Rush”: Pahrump, Nevada Experiencing a Booming Economy, Major Growth, and Thriving Tourism

PAHRUMP, Nev. (JAN 5, 2017) – A flourishing housing market. A considerable population increase. Dozens of new businesses opening their doors to the public. New and exclusive events. Over the past few years, a number of positive economic indicators have helped transform Pahrump, Nevada, to become a sleepy desert town on the rise.

Situated just one hour due west of Las Vegas, Pahrump has emerged from Sin City’s sizable shadow. Through trend analysis, careful planning, and embracing a unique twist on the spirit of the Southwest, Pahrump has established its own identity as a booming tourist destination with a diverse suite of amenities.

Billed as “Your Base Camp to Adventure,” Pahrump is situated in the perfect spot for adventure-seeking travelers to put down stakes before heading out in search of an escape. An impressive selection of lodging options, camping opportunities and highly-rated RV resorts provide thrill-seekers safe and comfortable homes away from home.

Given marked upswings in both population and tourism, the demand for goods and services has also grown. Thankfully, with more than 450 new business licenses issued since 2014, the city’s entrepreneurs are increasingly able to meet these needs. Franchised eateries like Carl’s Jr., Taco Bell and Dickey’s Barbecue Pit are sharing space with new car dealerships, pool emporiums, surplus stores, e-commerce startups and real estate agencies. The fast-growing construction and population influx have also called for additional service-based businesses, such as plumbing, electrical, beauty salons, concrete, fire protection and fabrication services.

In response to a significant increase in the city’s appeal as a tourist destination, new lodging options, such as the recently opened Holiday Inn Express and Suites and additional two-bedroom casitas at Wine Ridge Cottages and RV Resorts, have added a significant boost to the bottom line. Pahrump’s hotels have experienced a massive upswing in 2016, with year-to-year room taxes increasing to up to double their 2013 levels in peak months.

New and exclusive events have been boons to Pahrump’s economy, including Fireworks Over Pahrump, HydroFest, Pahrump Rock & Gem Show, and the Pahrump Nugget 250. These events have hiked visitation figures and brought in additional revenue to the town, while helping create awareness of Pahrump to a wide variety of tourists.

New-home construction is also booming, in large part due to the city’s population growth since 2012. New residents are drawn to Pahrump’s weather, myriad recreational activities and exceptionally reasonable cost of living. An adjacent development project to Mountain Falls Golf Club has already added more than 700 new homes to the area, with at least 1,500 more in the works. Overall, from July 2015 to May 2016, the City of Pahrump has issued more than 225 new home-building permits.

Southern Nevada has long been a tourist destination, thanks to allure of Las Vegas. But for visitors and prospective new residents looking for something a little less flashy and a bit more rugged, Pahrump offers a taste of what the locals refer to as “True Nevada” – untamed, and unforgettable. It’s 60 miles west, and 180 degrees different.
